Structural Tree Chart for Isaiah 57:14 through 62:10
The chart below presents the proposed structure of the major unit of Isaiah 57:14 - 62:10, and shows the correspondence of stanzas to branches in a branch-paired Menorah structure. Typically, each row of the chart is a stanza.
The chart below is similar to, but is updated from, charts in The Near and Far Theme and the Literary Structure of Isaiah. An important thing to observe is that verses containing the words “near” and/or “far” tend to fall in structural locations, that is, the words are found in verses that are bounding units.
This major unit of Isaiah contains incredible poetry with the tree structure metaphorically representing the new and infinitely better Kingdom of Christ. Isn’t that the tree we want to return to? The words that Christ read (see Luke 4) are found in the branch denoted here as a future Ephraim “Branch.” That is a wondrous thing to ponder.
Written in 2017, The Near and Far Theme seriously needs to be updated with additional understanding gained from Scriptures written prior to Isaiah, and slight chart modifications made, but the book has continuing technical value for serious students and commentary writers (please get the errata sheet and stay tuned to this website). Most individuals are much better off with Isaiah Revisited.
The words “near” and “far,” are consistently used throughout Isaiah in a structural manner. The use of “near” and “far” is ubiquitous through Isaiah, and these words are inextricably interlinked with the theme of the book.
